From the time the first Lutheran settlers arrived in America, the women of the church have “served the Lord with gladness.” The first societies (sewing circles) were organized in the 1850s. Achievements of the societies were so beneficial that a number of pastors and district officials envisioned a Synod-wide women’s league.
